오로라(borealis)는 로마 신화의 '햇살' 여신에서 따온 이름이다. 오로라는 태양의 강한 바람(태양 폭풍)이 지구의 표면에 부딪혀 극지방에서 볼 수 있는 현상이다. 그래서 온통 흰색인 극지방에서 오로나는 유일한 자연색이다. 오로라는 지구의 색깔 균형을 맞춘다.
르완다의 햇빛은 지구 상 가장 좋은 빛깔로 다양한 생명체를 품는다. 언제나 그렇듯 자연의 완벽한 균형은 외부의 부러움을 불러 일으키고, 르완다 또한 큰 상처와 슬픈 기억을 겪었다. 그래서 르완다의 아티스트는 보고 들은 기억을 색채로 담아 냈다. 그들의 색채는 르완다의 지난 복잡다단한 삶의 불균형을 달래주었다 . 우리는 이 모습을 '아프리카 오로라'라고 부른다.
전시 '아프리카 오로라' 는 아름다운 자연과 극적인 인류 역사를 경험한 르완다의 기억을 다채롭고 독특한 이미지로 펼친다. 각인된 기억을 표현하고 내면의 상처를 화해시키는 르완다만의 아트 방식을 엿볼 수 있다. 지금 아트 시장이 주목하는 곳 르완다, 한국에서 처음으로 르완다 컨템포러리 아트를 선보인다.

The aurora (borealis) is named after the goddess of sunshine in Roman mythology. The aurora isthe result of intense winds from the sun (the solar storm) striking the earth's bare surface. In the all-white polar regions, the aurora is the only color in nature. In this way, the aurora balances the colorof the entire planet. Rwanda's sunlight is one of the best on the planet, shedding on all life. Asalways, nature's perfect balance breeds external envy. Rwanda has also suffered great losses andrecent sad memories. So Rwandan artists are forced to capture the embodied memories, of whatthey have seen and heard, in color. The colors of the artists soothe the imbalance of human life inthe Rwandan sunshine. We call it the African Aurora. The exhibition "African Aurora" unfolds thememories of Rwanda, a country that has experienced the most beautiful nature and the mostdramatic human history, in colorful and unique images. It offers a glimpse into Rwandan art's way ofexpressing imprinted memories and reconciling internal wounds. This is the first time that Rwandanart will be presented in Korea as one of the most promising art field in the future.

TIMOTHY WANDULU

우간다 출신으로 현재 르완다 키갈리에서 크리에이티브 스튜디오를 운영하고 있다. 창작분야는 미디어, 사진, 조각, 가구 디자인, 건축, 퍼포먼스 아트 프로젝트, 설치에 이르기 까지 다양하다. 지역 및 국제 아트 프로젝트, 워크숍, 아티스트 레지던시 및 전시, 문화 교류에 관한 프로젝트에 참여하여 활동하고 있다.

Timothy Wandulu was born in Uganda, Rwandan by nationality. He is a multi-disciplinary self-taught artist running a creative studio in Kigali. His arts practice ranges from visual arts in mixed media paintings, photography and sculptures with interest in architecture for furniture design to performance art and installations. With experiences gained from participating in local and international arts projects, workshops, artist residencies and exhibitions, cultural exchanges and educational programs on leadership facilitation. These influence his role and growth as an artist.

JEMIMA KAKIZI

추상과 반추상이 교차하는 아트를 선보인다. 일상을 바라보는 방식의 변화에 관심이 있다. 그녀의 작품은 일상에서 금기되는 주제에 참여하도록 유도하며, 공동체 의식,사회 환경 개선에 유용한 아트를 구상한다

Akimanizanye Kakizi Jemima is a multidisciplinary artist whose artworks are an intersection of semi abstract and abstract. She is interested in making art that addresses things we go through in our daily lives (especially women) and changes the way we look at certain things. Her art invites everyone looking at it to engage in discussion about subjects that are rarely talked about or are even considered as taboo, which she believes is useful in engaging community consciousness and in improving social conditions. She believes that her art plays a role in boosting the confidence of women and in giving them a positive feeling.

BRAVE TANGZ

‘Brave Tangz’예명을 사용하는 Brave Rumariza는 르완다 키갈리 출신으로 2013년부터 독학하여, 아트 경력을 이어가고 있다. 캔버스,나무, 조각, 벽화, 설치 등 다양한 기법 및 형태를 적용한다. 2018년에는 Ndera center에서 정신 질환 아동을 돕는 ‘Hobe’아트 프로젝트를 시작했고, 2019년에는 ‘Free Minded Art Studio’를 오픈하여 운영하고 있다.

Brave Rumariza use 'Brave TANGZ' as an artistic name was born in Kigali, Rwanda where he started his art career as a self-taught visual artist in 2013 with painting (the same year he joined YEGO ARTS). He uses different techniques and forms of visual art with acrylics on canvas, wood, sculptures, murals, installation art and more. Through his art, he wants to convey a message of happiness and freedom to the people. In 2018, he started an art project called “Hobe” that helps mentally ill children at Ndera center. in 2019, he opened his art studio called” FREE MINDED ART STUDIO”. He has been a part of different exhibitions both solo and collective.

ISSAC IRUMVA

Isaac Irumva로 알려진 Isaac Manirumva는 르완다 출신 아티스트이다. 스스로 글로벌 관계에 영향 받는 당대인류, 현대 아트로 정의한다.  문화, 정체성, 캐릭터,기억을 주제로 그 만의 관점으로 사회를 격정으로 창작한다.

Isaac Iirumva is a Rwandan contemporary artist. He defines his art as Twenty First century contemporary, influenced by global culture and people’s relationship. His art is a dynamic combination of his perspectives and societal collectives; such as cultural dialogues, identities, characters and memories.

FLORIDE MUKABAGENI

1972년에 태어난 Floride Mukabageni는 르완다에서 전문아트기관(대학교)를 통해 아티스트 길을 걷고 있는 소수의 여성 아티스트 중 하나이다. 르완다 국립 미술관(Nyanza-Rwesero)에 작품이 전시된 르완다 대표 여성 아티스트 중 한 명이다. 그녀는 르완다,케냐,탄자니아,독일에서 회화와 조각을 전시하며 성공적인 커리어를 쌓았다.

Born in 1972, Floride Mukabageni is among the few female artists who went to Art school of Nyundo and afterwards, pursued an art career. She was among the women artists chosen to exhibit their artwork at the National Art Gallery (Nyanza-Rwesero) which later became the Rwanda Art Museum (2018). Her work “Imbabazi/Forgiveness” is under the permanent exhibition “Art For Peace” at the Rwanda Art Museum. Mukabageni enjoyed a successful career at the beginning of the new millennium when her paintings and sculptures were exhibited in Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and Germany. The few years proved not to be easy for Mukabageni, who is solely raising her two sons and later moved from Rwanda to Uganda looking for better job opportunities. Now, Mukabageni is announcing her “come-back” after almost a decade being away from the art scene of the region.

STRONG KARAKIRE

르완다에서 아트 스튜디오를 운영하고 있다. 2004년부터 창작하여 여러 아트 페어에서 수상했다. 추상 표현과 혼합한 독특한 사실주의를 완성했다. 르완다, 브룬디,탄자니아,케냐,보츠와나, 세이셸,모리셔스,중국,독일,프랑스,미국 등에서 아티스트 레지던시에 참여하고 전시를 펼치고 있다.

Strong Karakire is a self-taught contemporary artist currently based in Rwanda where he has his own art studio. He has been painting since 2004 and has won several prizes. He has been able to master the style of realism which he mixes with abstract painting to produce beautiful artworks. He has exhibited his work and has had art residencies in different countries including Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, Botswana, Seychelles, Mauritius, China, Germany, France, United States.

MYRIAM U, BIRARA

1992년 생으로 재무학을 공부했다. 지금은 독립 아티스트, 영화 제작자로서 스토리텔러로 풀타임 활동하고 있다. 그녀의 작품은 주로 사람에 대한 것으로 아프리카 여성,그들의 관계, 감정, 일상을 탐구한다. 일상의 아름다움과 비극에 대한 이야기 방식의 창작스타일을 만들고 있다.

Myriam U, Birara is a self-taught independent artist, who discovered her passion for drawing from a very young age, from that she got introduced to storytelling as a filmmaker which she currently do full time. She was born in 1992 and holds a bachelor degree in finance. Her art explores mostly relationships between people especially women, their basic emotions and daily lives. She is interested in exploring and making paintings that speak to herself and to others about the beauty or tragedy which she finds in life.

MDD(MUCYO Daniel Dylan)

Mucyo Daniel Dylan는 MDD ARTS로 알려졌다. 2001년에 태어난 르완다 출신으로 흑인,문화,아프로퓨처리즘(Afrofuturism)에 기반을 두고 창작한다. 다양한 매체와 형식에 개방적으로 경험하여 지금은 자신만의 미학으로 디지털과 혼합하여 창작하고 작품을 선보이고 있다.

Mucyo Daniel Dylan is also known as MDD ARTS. He was born in 2001 and a visual artist from Rwanda. His art pieces celebrate black people, culture and Afrofuturism. Being open to different art forms has and is still giving him an experience on the arts allowing him to mix different art forms with his own ideas and aesthetics together digitally and create artworks. Sometimes he is unsure of what inspires himself, but he is usually drawn by inner-me, his own mood, and the moment of the day. It’s therapeutic and it’s just his way of releasing his creative spirit. Also, his fellow independent artists inspire him to be more creative. His art shares sentiments and thoughts. He wants his art to light a candle in the dark and to be a lookout for others who might need encouragement.
